Free Online Word Counter
The Word Counter is a fast, privacy-friendly tool that instantly measures the length and structure of any text you paste into it. As you type or paste, it reports the number of words, characters (with and without spaces), sentences, paragraphs, and an estimated reading time. Everything happens directly in your browser, so your content is never uploaded to a server and is never stored.
Why writers and students use a word counter
Many writing tasks come with strict limits. University essays cap the number of words, scholarship applications restrict personal statements, and most social platforms enforce a maximum character count. Meta descriptions for search engines work best between 150 and 160 characters, while title tags should stay under roughly 60 characters. Keeping an eye on these numbers while you write saves you from painful last-minute trimming and helps your content display correctly wherever it is published.
How to use the tool
Paste or type your text into the input field. The statistics update live with every keystroke, so there is no button to press and no waiting. If you clear the field, every counter resets to zero. The tool treats any run of whitespace as a single separator, which means copy-pasted text with irregular spacing is counted accurately.
What each statistic means
Words are counted by splitting your text on spaces and line breaks. Characters include every symbol you typed; the “no spaces” figure removes whitespace so you can match strict character limits. Sentences are detected by terminal punctuation such as periods, question marks, and exclamation points. Paragraphs are separated by blank lines. Reading time estimates how long an average reader needs at 200 words per minute, rounded up to the next full minute.
Privacy by design
Because the analysis is performed entirely on your device, you can safely paste confidential drafts, client work, or unpublished manuscripts. Nothing is logged, nothing is transmitted, and the tool works even if you go offline after the page has loaded.
